The Radical Travel Guide to Beijing, China: Hutongs
In order to get a sense of what Beijing looked like prior to the massive construction of the last five or so years, make a point of touring the many alleyways known as "hutongs". "Hutongs" (from a Mongolian word meaning "water well") are 9-meter wide lanes or alleys formed by lines of small houses. Some hutongs are characterized by impressive architecture, stonework and woodwork - not seen in any modern buildings.
The Chinese government is increasingly replacing hutongs with large modern skyscrapers. So make sure to visit hutongs before they disappear!
